album listens #88 - gaucho - steely dan

far too sexy for its own good and far too sexy for steely dan to be making music like this. not entirely sure how to feel about this one, i really love parts of it and other parts feel like it doesn't really understand what it's doing, then about halfway through i started appreciating the sort of empty space that is left in the middle of verses. to me the empty space is where the soul of this album resides, which is not necessarily a bad thing? it's not something i've ever really heard a project do before and it only makes the more melodic aspects stand out. i think this one will take some more listens to understand if i like it or not

FAVOURITE SONG: Time Out Of Mind

RATING: 7/10 at the moment

album listens #87 - night train - oscar peterson trio

catching up on some stuff i've missed over the last few weeks. a lovely little slow jazz album here by oscar peterson. best listened to in a dimly lit room, very pleasant on the ears with some more upbeat songs too!

FAVOURITE SONG: Bag's Groove, Hymn to Freedom

RATING: 8/10

album listens #85 - masked dancers: concern in so many things you forget where you are

honestly nowhere near as good as there next album, but it's nice to see where they came from, a lot of raw ideas that, whilst they are creative, just don't always work on this album. everything that is good on this album is perfect on the next. that being said, there are lots of raw and awesome moments on here. definitely one of, if not my favourite, of the genre.

FAVOURITE SONG: I See It Too, Born Again So Many Times You Forget Who You Are, It's a Lot It's Seamless

RATING: 6/10

album listens #84 - no hands - joey valence & brae

so fun + upbeat. instant head bop as soon as u put this on. love the early 2000s vibe. sort of re-hashes a lot of the boom bap genre in a way that feels refreshing? wears its influences proudly on its sleeve (obviously beastie boys etc) in a way that is defiant of them at the same time. again just super fun, kinda silly but the energy is just so awesome. definitely is a place for music like this that doesn't take itself seriously in any capacity but still does it with full authenticity.

FAVOURITE SONG: WHERE U FROM, BUSSIT, PACKAPUNCH (feat. Danny Brown), THE BADDEST, WHAT U NEED

RATING: 7/10
